I am a highly motivated senior lecturer, consultant and entrepreneur. My main lecturing responsibility lies in the area of web application development as well as data, text and web mining. I have supervised more than 100 final yearprojects, 30+ Masters projects and several PhD projects. Further I have been external examiner for both, undergraduate and post graduate programmes, edited two books in the area of advanced data/text analysis and published over 30 peer-reviewed academic papers at conferences and journals. I have worked with more than 20 different SMEs on approximately 30 Enterprise Ireland Innovation Vouchers, aiming to improve their information technology requirements. As entrepreneur I have been involved in a few ventures but more recently with Bioxplor and their information extraction of bio medical data, and my own start-up called Wordalytics which has gone live in 2018.
Most importantly however, I am husband to my beautiful wife Glenda and father to the three most active and most beautiful boys in the world.
Over the past 15 years I have lectured a vast array of modules focusing on advanced data analysis related areas such as Business Intelligence, Data Exploration and Pre-Processing, and Text and Web Content Mining.
I have published nationally and internationally more than 30 peer reviewed papers over the past few years in a mixed set of areas such as public transportation, virtual learning environments, educational technologies and advanced data/text analysis.
External Examiner tasks are hugely interesting as they provide insights into other third level academic examination policies and procedures. I have been external examiner on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for Trinity College Dublin, Sligo IT, Athlone IT, National College of Ireland and the College for Computer Training and Limerick IT (current).
Mainly through Enterprise Ireland's funding scheme known as 'Innovation Vouchers', I had the pleasure working with more than 20 SMEs and start-ups. This was/is considerably important to me as it ensures that I am in touch with what happens in industry and don't just teach out of a text book.
I am currently involved with two start-ups: (1) Bioxplor who work on information extraction of bio medical data and (2) Wordalytics which provides an analytical service to website owners and developers.
I have edited two books namely "RapidMiner: Data Mining Use Cases and Business Analytics Applications" and "Text Mining, Web Mining, and Visualization Use Cases Using Open Source Tools" both published by Chapman & Hall/CRC.
After completing my PhD at Trinity College Dublin I started lecturing at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown where I am part of a core team who delivers a fully online MSc in Computing in Business Intelligence and Data Mining. I also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students at QQI levels 8, 9 and 10.
Over the past 13 years I have been a member of various programme development boards, academic council, and the postgraduate subcommittee. Externally I've given nationally and internationally invited talks and workshops, and served as external examiner.
I have been a core member of the ITT conference team, several TPCs at national and international level and also technically reviewed many books, journal papers and conference papers
